The History of the Freak
We started as a barrel company. The product that gave us that early success was the spiral ported All American barrel. The porting helped stabilize the ball in the barrel which improved accuracy while reducing the sound signature. However, as the number of paintball manufacturers increased and with the success of the open-bolt style Autocockers, the need for a better barrel increased. Smart Parts started making two-piece barrel designs with backs that had varying bore sizes to account for changes in paint size. Players were carrying a lot of barrels in their gear bags to make sure they had what they needed.
In 2000, Bill Gardner invented the Freak Barrel System which changed everything.
Now players could bore size their barrels quickly and easily. This was extremely important as it improved accuracy, efficiency and reduced ball breakage. The Freak System was a must for all paintball players. The Freak system has evolved over time and moved to the XL inserts to increase the bore area even further. Other companies like PE started to make their barrels “Freak Ready” to accept the Freak Inserts.
However, when the Smart Parts patent expired, most of the major paintball companies decided to jump into the barrel game. Rather than accept the industry standard, they wanted to change it. They took the Freak Insert design and modified it so that players would have to buy their new barrels. They made their markers use this new design so that players would have buy their inserts instead of the Freak System. Today, PE, DYE, Carbon, Infamous and Inception
all use this PWR design.
In the end, the PWR insert is just a copy of the Freak Insert System. However, we think it is unfair to make customers, stores and the entire industry have two different barrel insert systems. Therefore, we are moving to the FREAK POWER SYSTEM which will be compatible with the PWR inserts, backs and fronts on all competitor designs as well as all new DLX Markers and barrel designs. (Don’t worry, we have plenty of XL inserts to support our current customers).
We have been making barrels for over 40 years so quite frankly, our FREAK POWER inserts and systems are better.
